Where are they now? - Carlos Marinelli

By Shaun • Jul 23rd, 2008 • Category: Featured Articles

Carlos Marinelli arrived on Teeside to massive expectations, labelled the "new Maradona" by the local press, he was signed from Boca Juniors for £1.5million. Initially included in the academy set up i remeber going along to the Riverside to watch an FA Youth Cup game against Newcastle (i think) where Marinelli was in a class of his own and showed some fantastic ball skills.

The trouble for Marinelli was he had joined Boro at 17 as a skillful attacking player and Boro were struggling. He made his first appearance off the substitutes bench on Boxing Day 1999 in a dismal 1-0 loss to Sheffield Wednesday. He needed to wait nearly a year to be given his first start November 25th 2000 in a 2-2 home draw to Bradford City, Boro however were struggling at the wrong end of the table.

Between 2001 and 2003 Marinelli enjoyed a few extended spells in the Boro first team including a magnificent display against Derby in which he scored twice in a 5-1 win. However Steve McLaren did not fancy the Argentine and he made his final appearance for Boro on August 16th 2003, scoring in a 3-2 win at Fulham.

During the 2003 season he spent some time on loan to Torino but struggled with injury and a permanent deal did not materialise. Upon his release from Middlesbrough Carlos returned to Argentina and Boca Juniors for a short spell beofre signing for rival club Racing.

Marinelli returned to Italy and Torino 2004/05 season where he played 16 times and scored once, the nomadic playmaker then moved to Braga in Portugal for a short and unsuccessful spell.

In 2007 Carlos Marinelli went to America and joined MLS side Kansas City Wizards. His first season in MLS was largely a success as he impressed with his skill and eye for the killer pass. 2008 has not been so good as Carlos has struggled with injury and recently left the country to take care of some personal issues and recover from injury prompting rumours that he may not be in MLS much longer (we stress that these are just rumours and Marinelli may yet return to MLS and Kansas City).

  1. Disappointed when Marinelli was released, i had high hope for him. Guess the way his career has panned out vindicates McLaren’s decision to release him.

  2. I personally think he had the talent but was not mentally strong enough to play at Premier League level. Don’t think he was the kind of player McLaren wanted so he was never going to get a proper run in the team. Shame the way his career has panned out so far.

  3. [...] Where are they now? - Carlos Marinelli [...]

  4. Lets be honest, he was never good enough to make it at Premier League level and McLaren knew that.

  5. there are rumours he is new player of Millonarios in Bogota, Colombia

  6. Thanks for that David, I have also heard rumours of him signing for Bristol City in England (not sure if they are true though).

  7. I am a fan of Millonarios, he is a new player of our team. I have read that he play in Middlesbrough. Colombian journalism says that he is a good player, and he has good shooting and good technique.

Can you tell me about this player?? I will be happy if any person describes me the new player of my team.

  8. Hi Alejandro,

Thank you for visiting the site.

Carlos was at Middlesbrough as a very young player. He was a very skillful and creative player who loved to have the ball at his feet. He has a very cultured left foot too. The main problem he had at Middlesbrough was adapting to the physical side of the English game, he faded in and out of games and didn’t like the rough stuff.

I always thought he was a very special talent but one who has yet to reach anywhere near his potential. I wish him luck in Colombia.

  9. Now its official, it has been confirmed by the Colombia´s Biggest Club, Club Deportivo Los Millonarios, as a new player for 2009, he signed up for a year. according to the press articles he seems to be the creative solution for a team which needs to be champion soon.
The team is most comonly known as Millonarios or “Millos”, and is one of the most important teams of Colombia, it is located in Bogotá which is the capital, and in the 50’s was known as the world’s best team.

  10. As millos is a big team, with the biggest amount of fans all over the country, it would be nice for all of us to hear something about his talent and skills.
    Thanks for your comments.

  11. I think he will be suited to the Colombian League, it was too fast paced for him over here. Marinelli had outstanding technical ability but just could not get to grips with the league. He started very well for Torino and his American team too and then faded so hopefully he will settle in Colombia. I hope he does because I always keep a track of him, had the talent to be an outstanding footballer.

  12. Yes, Millonarios is most known as “Millos”, Millonarios is the team that has won more championships in Colombia. Millos has the biggest amount of fans, Millos fans are famous because we go always to the stadium, int does not matter if the team is playing bad.

The best time of Millos was in the decade of 50. It was considered the best team in the world, Mllos was invited by Real Madrid when Real served 50 years. We won in Santiago Bernabeu 4-2.

Millos has not been champion in the last 20 years, so fans of Millos want to be champion soon.

I will tell you what happen with Marinelli in Millos, I hope I tell good news soon.

  13. Hi, I’m a big Millos fan too and hopefully wait to see a great Marinelli’s performance next year. During the last seasons we’ve been suffering the need of one creative midfielder, especially the last one, ’cause we have a couple of experienced players (Oscar Cordoba - goalkeeper; Hurtado - Defender (yes, from Ecuador) and a killer attack) but no one to take the ball from backyard to the other goal. Our league is extremely different from the Premier League, the ball goes runnin’ on the field the most of the time and the “air-game” its not really used. This type of game is better for the skills of Marinelli, which he can run with the ball stick to his feet. Our league it’s not good and not world competitive, for that reason I think a player like him can overhang easily.

  14. To all fans of Millos, welcome :D

I like Colombian players. One of my favourites is Ivan Cordoba… always loved pacey defenders who get forward. Very small for a defender aswell which is what makes him that bit more special.

I hope Marinelli performs for your team. He has outstanding technical ability and should flourish with the ball at his feet. As an added gesture, i hope you win the league soon!
