Wheater flies off to Minsk as Boro boys help England progress
By Shaun • Oct 15th, 2008 • Category: Boro NewsDavid Wheater flew out to Belarus immediately after the Under-21’s secured their passage into the European Championships at the expense of Wales. Wheater and Joe Hart, the Man City goalkeeper, have been called up to join Fabio Capello’s squad ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifier.
It is great news for Wheater and further evidence of the high regard he is held in by the England camp and Fabio Capello. Though there is little chance he will be involved against Belarus, barring further injuries to the likes of Upson and Ferdinand, it is great experience for the young Redcar born centre-half.
Wheater leaves for Minsk fresh from helping England beat Wales in the Under-21 playoff game, alongside fellow Boro youngster Adam Johnson. In truth England can count themselves a little fortunate to be progressing to the finals as Wales were the better team on the night and had the games’ stand out player in Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey.
Ramsey, who Boro fans will remember helped Cardiff dump us out of the cup last season, was instrumental in everything Wales did, showed class and awareness on the ball and pretty much dominated the midfield. It was England though who went ahead courtesy of a 25 yard free kick from Spurs midfielder Tom Huddlestone, only to see Ramey equalise with a fine left footed strike.
Wales went ahead as Ramsey put Reading striker Simon Church through and he finished well past Joe Hart. England equalised and confirmed their passage into the finals when Newcastle defender Steven Taylor saw his header deflect off Sam Vokes and into the Welsh net. 2-2 on the night, England go through 5-4 on aggregate.
