The fans have spoken! Turnbull to start against Spurs

By Shaun • Aug 11th, 2008 • Category: First Team
Turnbull the clear winner

We launched our first ever poll last week to see who you thought should start between the sticks against Tottenham. Ross Turnbull was a resounding winner with 58% of the votes, in second place there are still 21% of you who think Gareth Southgate will bring in a goalkeeper before Saturday’s game.

Alarmingly for Brad Jones, more Boro fans would like to see youngster Jason Steele thrown in against Spurs than have the Aussie in goal. 13 percent voting for the academy keeper against Brad’s 8%.

After trawling the poll data we, unfortunately, did not find a vote from a G Southgate :) so we are still in the dark over who the Boro boss will select for Saturday’s Premier League game but it is clear who the fans would prefer to see on the team sheet.

  1. Well i voted for Turnbull and i’m not surprised to see Jones at the bottom of that list. Got a long way to go to win Boro fans over i feel.

  2. Whoever Middlesbrough choose in goal, I hope he doesn’t have back problems.
I’ve got a feeling he’ll be bending down to pick-up balls in the back of the net rather often on Saturday.

  3. I’m quietly confident. Fair enough you’ve scored a lot in pre-season against nobody teams and a Roma side weeks behind in preperation but i think Boro are looking good going into the season. Definately think there’ll be goals in this one though, here’s hoping for a good, entertaining game.

  4. Cant quite say that Celtic and Borussia Dortmund are nobody teams, however Boro away is a tough first fixture, but there is a quiet confidence around WHL this season and you’ll do well to keep a clean sheet against the array of talent we have going forward

  5. I don’t think we’ll keep a clean sheet either but i also think we will score. I think it’s gonna be an entertaining game with a few goals and hopefully Boro nick it 3-2 :)

  6. You lads got anymore reserves you want shot of? I hear Roy Keane is shopping

2-2 draw for me on saturday

  7. lol. the fans have spoken? 38 of you voted

  8. Dan, All due respect, where i do agree half the teams Spurs beat in pre season where below par standard wise (which all teams tend to do), Celtic, scottish champions are a week ahead of us, Dortmond, usual German hard hats and are at the same stage as us and Roma, runners up in serie A and champins league regulars, All this fitness nonsense does’nt wash with me, They are professional athletes and just because they have a few weeks away would not all of a sudden make them 50% less fit than they already are and one or two weeks behind us on training really would ‘nt make any real difference at all.

  9. We’ve still got a few to off-load:

Younes Kaboul looks like he’s off to Portsmouth (£6-£7 million).

Anthony Gardner has gone to Hull City on loan, wioth a view to a permanent transfer.

Ricardo Rocha, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Hossam Ghaly, Paul Stalteri and Lee Young-pyo would all seem to be surplus to current requirements too.

  10. @Locky yeah i was a little disappointed with the numbers in the vote (of the 5000 visits this past week only 38 votes) but we’re a new site less than a month old and we’ve only just added the poll feature, have to start somewhere.

@Barry. I’ve been impressed with Spurs in pre-season and they’ve obviously spent big so it’ll be a big test for us at the Riverside. Think this may be a big season for Bent, gonna be full of confidence.

    Thanks for the comments

  11. I love the middlesborough optimism.

“I’m quietly confident. Fair enough you’ve scored a lot in pre-season against nobody teams and a Roma side weeks behind in preperation but i think Boro are looking good going into the season.”

Roma finished 2nd in Serie A last season… true they’re a few weeks behind in pre-season but they have been training and no Champions league team would expect to get hammered like that. Celtic lost 2-0 to us and they are the Scottish Champions. It’s true that Borussia Dortmund aren’t the same team from 3 or 4 years ago but 3-0 is still a good scoreline.

I don’t expect Spurs to win the league, but I would say that you should be a little more nervous coming into this game than you are. Let’s just hope your players are also feeling over confident. I reckon 2-0 Spurs.

  12. Don’t bother turning up Boro, have an extra week off. No fun being used as target practise.

  13. “Don’t bother turning up Boro, have an extra week off. No fun being used as target practise.”

If only all teams did that for you THFC6062, you may actually have a chance of finishing above Arsenal.

  14. It should be an entertaining game this Saturday and whilst quietly confident as most fans are at the beginning of the season, the Boro will certainly give us a stiff test.here’s to a good game and a great season for both our clubs..

  15. No chance of finishing above Arsenal this season, but I am sure we will have a better season in the league than last.

  16. Hey far out someone responded. I thought this was a new site that no one visited. It’s coming up on the NewsNow spurs stories site…

    http://www.newsnow.co.uk/h/Sport/Football/Premier+League/Tottenham+Hotspur/Top+Rated+Sources+Only

Good luck to ya Boro, should be a good game. Good luck with the new site as well, hope it takes off

  17. Fair play Blue and White!!, good luck to you. Though not on Sat :)

I think Boro are a couple of players away from a very good starting 11, lets just hope Alves, Wheater, Downing and Turnbull stay fit.

  18. You Boro fans crack me up, this will be the biggest ever away win at the Riverside….you’ll be lucky to get nil!!!!

  19. As the famous Len Shackleton once said eh?..Yes and i suppose you said the same thing prior to the Sunderland away game last season as well.Let’s keep a lid on this provocative nonsense and see how the season progresses before we get get carried away,Yid army.

  20. I’m sure Arsenal fans felt the same last season and they were sent back to London empty handed. Confidence is one thing but don’t get ahead of yourself.

  21. Well said Boro fan…..

  22. Yeah Yid Army don’t jinx us. I was only having a larf.

  23. Cheers THFC6062a, site is growing quite nicely.

Always good to get some good natured banter going between fans though :)

  24. Dan,

with all due respect, Roma, Dortmund, and Celtic are not exactly mickey mouse sides. Celtic were a week ahead of us in preparation but we still beat them 2-0. Dortmund fell 3-.0, and yesterday Roma fell 5-0, though they are a week or so behind in preparation. But so were we against Celtic. Apart from Celtic, I don’t know who you have played? I know you played in Scotland but can’t remember the result. So if you think we played nobodies, then what will you call the teams you have played over preseason that you have struggled to exert authrity over them?

I have nothing against Boro. Infact, in the Northeast, I will rather you lot won your mini league over there. I like your chairman alot. But please stop dismissing other clubs’ efforts especially when you haven’t done anything significant yourself. Peace.

  25. TBH i’d take a draw against Spurs. Our big game is going to be Stoke at home, we need to improve from last season and beat teams like Stoke comfortably at home.

  26. Im a Spurs fan and some of you are getting a little carried away. Remember pre-season games mean very little to the turnout of the season. We havent lost a preseason game in 4 years trust me dont get ahead of yourselves. Admittedly were looking a lot better than we have in the past but Im not holding my breath. We still havent finished our summer spending yet and Boro will be the hardest team that we have faced this summer. I reckon we will still win 2-0 but it wont be a walk in the park like Roma. Good luck Boro youll need it this season but as a side I think you have a decent enough outfit.

  27. I fully understand my friends enthusiasm for the game but think I will be a lot closers , it true spurs have scored a lot of goals in preseason, preseason form count for nothing next weekend but we do have strong frontline are defence is not bad only area of concern will be holding midfield role …. See spurs wining this one 4-2 with top three end of season, Liverpool manager first out and England not needing too qualify for 2010 world cup (as will moved to england )
