St Ledger and Folan - your view?

By Shaun • Sep 17th, 2009 • Category: Boro News

Boro have confirmed the loan signings of Sean St Ledger from Preston North End and Caleb Folan from Hull City to strengthen the squad ahead of the promotion push.

St Ledger is a central defender who comes in to the squad as a replacment for Robert Huth. Currently young Seb Hines is partnering David Wheater at the heart of the Boro defence so there is a good chance of St Ledger working his way into the first team. With Chris Riggott and Emanuel Pogatetz still to come back from injury you would like to think we will have good depth in that position when they return.

Here is a little insight into St Ledger from Preston fan and editor of Preston North End Mad, Simon:

Sean St ledger was signed by Paul Simpson as one of his first signings. Prior to signing his claim for fame was being a ratty teenager at Peterborough after having a fall out with Big Ron on a tv documentary. He has been in the team since signing proving a useful centre back who comes out of defence making decisive forward surges in important games. He can also contribute at corners and is a commanding player who has grown with experience as shown by his recent call ups to the Irish squad.

He is a down to earth lad who actually loved playing here and didn't want to leave but due to financial restraints the club had to let him go. He lacks spatial awareness and he's been known to let his marker go on the odd occasion but he is improving with time.

Caleb Folan comes into the squad hoping he can fill the "problem role" of target man for Middlesbrough. We have quick, mobile centre forwards in Jeremie Aliadiere and Marvin Emnes, by adding Folan we have maybe added a "Plan B". Folan can put himself about and challenge for aerial balls, hold it up and bring the midfield into play. What he seemingly won't do is find the back of the net on a regular basis though, his goalscoring record is pretty poor to say the least. I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt and get behind him, Boro cannot really lose in the deal. He either joins and becomes a success, scoring goals or he returns to Hull at the end of his loan spell.

What do you think, are these deals good business for Boro? Is this the last deal we will see or are we likely to see another player added?

  1. Pleased we have added St Ledger, a mate at work is a PNE fan and he is gutted to be losing him. Not that fussed on Folan like, but lets see how he gets on before slagging the lad

    Come On Boro

  2. Folan is clearly a bit of a Heskey type - whether that kind of player is rated or not is up to you, but he does give us an added dimension. It says a lot to me that just as Capello sees Heskey as a focal point in his England team, so Trapattoni is using Folan with Ireland, and both countries are seeing some success with them. That, to me, is a pretty strong recommendation.

  3. Thats a good point Mike and one which I had not really considered. It’s going to be interesting to see how he is used by Southgate, of course he has to find a way into the side first!

  4. Princi- pals of these schools know that engaging the community is not just another program to be implemented, but a new way of approaching the increasingly demanding job of the principal. ,
