Nathan Porritt leaves Boro - A waste of talent?

By Shaun • Feb 1st, 2010 • Category: Boro News

Nathan Porritt, once considered one of the brightest young players in the country, has had his contract cancelled by Boro. Porritt shot into the limelight in 2006 in a BBC Panorama documentary in which it was alleged that several other teams (Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle) had attempted to "tap up" the Boro youngster in an attempt to lure him away from The Riverside.

We identified Porritt as One to Watch last year and after watching a few reserve outings I was impressed with his technical ability if not a little perturbed by his attitude on the field.

However the writing appeared to be on the wall for the youngster as he was constantly overlooked by both Southgate and Strachan this season as other youngsters like Franks and Luke Williams forced their way into the squad.

An ill-fated spell at Darlington in which he was labelled as arrogant and dis-interested seemed to have sealed his fate and he was shown the door by Gordon Strachan.

It's a real shame to see such an obviously talented player fail to live up to his billing and it will be interesting to see what happens next for Porritt. This will either be the kick up the arse he needed and he will end up knuckling down and shining for the next club he finds himself at or he will fade away into obscurity.

  1. Shame, just shows what a bad attitude can do to a players career… Like you said, will be interesting to see what happens to him now…

  2. A big shame….maybe this will be the kick up the arse he needs…..or the end of his short carear.

  3. For Nathan Poritt read Stephen Bell. Lets hope it doesn’t all end like Stephen.

  4. I think there is more to this than a bad attitude!!!!

  5. He is a real talent - numerous excellent displays for the boro reserves - he is better than franks - u only have to go onto the boro website and read the reserve reports his name is plastered all over them - Im glad hes left boro - maybe is attitude did let him down but not many ppl could handle such expectations at that age and being plastered in the papers and on bbc1 as a school kid - hes bound to get a little bit big headed….he will kick on now - maybe start in a lower division or even abroad but he will be at a prem team with in 2-3 seasons!

  6. I don’t need to go to the Boro website to read the reserve reports, I have been to numerous reserve games over the last few seasons and rarely has Porritt been excellent. He has had moments of quality and I have no doubt that the boy has talent but Jon Franks was always the more effective attacking threat and I am not surprised to see it is Franks that has made the step up.

I hope he does go on and have a great career at a high level but I have my doubts.

  7. [...] Porritt was released by Middlesbrough in January 2010 after failing to realise his potetial at the club. [...]

  8. He is currently training with portuguese side Belenenses, it´s a try out but i think Porritt has a big chance there.

  9. If thats the case Marc then I wish him all the best, I genuinely hope he bounces back from this. A little odd that he went off to Portugal, why not try to get another club in England?

  10. [...] to Marc in the comments of another article for pointing out that Porritt has gone off to Portugal in an attempt to find a new [...]
