Mido and Tuncay to follow Downing out the door?

By Shaun • Jul 23rd, 2009 • Category: Boro News

Boro manager Gareth Southgate appears confident that deals will be reached that see both Mido and Tuncay Sanli follow Stewy Downing out of the Middlesbrough exit door. Neither player travelled with the squad to Scotland for Boro's 5-0 win over Dumbarton.

Southgate appears to be, rightly, much more focused on keeping youngsters Adam Johnson and David Wheater at the club, letting highly paid foreign stars move on to pastures new. Tuncay and Mido are guaranteed to be amongst the top earners at the club and, following relegation, Boro need tomove them on. I'm sure no tears will be shed when Mido finally moves on, though there will be pangs of regret when Tuncay signs for a new club.

Southgate told The Northern Echo:

We know that Mido would like to move on in an ideal world – as would Tuncay – and I’m sure those deals will happen, but that doesn’t take care of itself. It is something I have to deal with but while I’m here, my focus is on the players who’ve come on this trip.

I’m pleased to have Mido back. He’s stayed at the training ground so he can get his fitness levels up to be able to train with the rest of the team. But for the time being we focus on the group that are here with us in Scotland.

No mention yet on the future of Brazilian forward Afonso Alves, though many Boro fans would have expected him to be sold before the season starts. If Boro don't receive a decent enough offer i can see them holding on to the Brazilian until at least January.
