Matthew Bates on the comeback trail as reserves lose
By Shaun • Nov 5th, 2008 • Category: Reserves & AcademyMatthew Bates made his second Reserve Team appearence last night as Martin Scott's side were beaten 2-1 by Wigan at the Robin Park Arena.
The 21-year-old, who has had dreadful luck with injuries since making his breakthrough into the first team, successfully played the first 45 minutes during Boro's defeat to Newcastle a fortnight ago and followed that up with a good performance against Wigan, despite giving away a penalty.
Former FA Youth Cup winner David Knight returned in goal for Boro after signing a one-month contract following an injury to Jason Steele. It was Boro who took the lead against Wigan, following excellent work from Nathan Porritt, who ran virtually the whole length of the pitch and slid in Gary Martin, who finished well.
Wigan came back though and levelled courtesy of a Ryan Taylor penalty, they sealed the 3 points when Jonathan Routledge fired home from just inside the box.
Boro: Knight; Bates, Bennett, Walker (Corker 86), Hines, Johnson, Franks, Smallwood, Martin, Saiko, Porritt. Unused subs: Filler (gk); Robinson, Shead. *Cronesberry pulled out of squad with illness
