Johnson goal lights up victory over Dumbarton
By Shaun • Jul 23rd, 2009 • Category: Match NewsMiddlesbrough romped to a 5-0 victory over Scottish Second Division side Dumbarton with England under-21 winger Adam Johnson scoring the pick of the goals. The only downside of an otherwise fine run out for the Boro team was a hip injury to Frenchman Didier Digard, hopefully not too bad of an injury as we could really do with him staying injury free for a while!
Boro took the lead courtesy of Gary O'Neill who swept home a Digard cross after the Frenchman had linked up with Marvin Emnes. That lead was doubled courtesy of an own goal from Michael Dunlop who, inadvertantly, glanced a Justin Hoyte cross into his own net.
Two became three moments later as Justin Hoyte was brought down in the box and French striker, Jeremie Aliadiere, converted the spot kick.
The goal of the game came in the second half, on 70 minutes, as Adam Johnson jinked passed the defender and lashed home a left shot from the edge of the area.
Boro grabbed their fifth three minutes later as Rhys Williams rose highest to a Josh Walker corner and his header beat a covering defender on the line.
A pretty easy run out for the Boro team but no doubt a confidence boost ahead of the Sheffield United game, it still remains to be seen whether we will add to the squad ahead of the season opener or if any of the so called "bigger" names (Tuncay, Alves and Mido) will be here come kick off on Friday the 7th.
MIDDLESBROUGH: Jones (Coyne 46), Hoyte (McMahon 72), Bates (Wheater 72), Huth (Hines 72), Grounds (Taylor 72), O'Neil (J Johnson 72), Arca (Capt) (Williams 72), Digard (Walker 29), Yeates (A Johnson 65), Aliadiere (Franks 46), Emnes (Porritt 63).
Note: The friendly with Darlington has been cancelled due to spate of injuries for the League Two side.
