Gibbo defends the £6m sale of Young

"Selling a 29-year-old full-back for £6million a year after we bought him for £2.5million, and doing so in the knowledge that we will replace him, is right for the football club in the short term, medium term and the long term."

Steve Gibson has moved to re-assure fans that the sale of Young to Aston Villa was best for the club.

Young completed his move to Villa at around 10:30pm last night, and was very pleased with the deal.

“This was too good an opportunity to miss,” Young told The Villains official website.

“I’m really pleased to be here at Villa. It’s happened quite quickly. One minute I was training up at Boro and the next I’m down here for a medical.

While a lot of fans were dissapointed, so was this editor, until I read his reaction and his apparent uncaring attitude towards the Boro fans who have made him feel at home this past year.

“Obviously I’m glad to be here now but it could have been a year earlier. There was interest last summer but it didn’t quite happen for whatever reason. I’m just glad to find myself here now.”

“I think this is a great opportunity for me to try and win something. I think at the minute Villa are a notch above Boro and there’s a great opportunity for me to play European football as well.”

Well, im glad to see it’s all about the money, the immediate success, and that Boro were always second choice… I won’t deny he’s been brilliant for us, but good riddance, and the same goes for any other player that would rather move on.

Gibbo was talking to MFC.co.uk this morning and had this to say;

“The fans need to know that we will only do what’s right for the football club in the short term, medium term and the long term,”

“Selling a 29-year-old full-back for £6million a year after we bought him for £2.5million, and doing so in the knowledge that we will replace him, is right for the football club in the short term, medium term and the long term.”

“We’re already busy working on bringing in a replacement.”

We can assume that because he’s using the world “replacement” that he will be bringing in a player of equal quality… well, we can hope.

Boro have been linked with Arsenal’s Justin Hoyte, Fulham’s Moritz Volz and Liverpool’s Steve Finnan is also being eyed up to take Young’s place.

Many would like to see McMahon take more of an active role, i believe Finnan would allow this, as he cannot play every game, Finnan would have the quality to perhaps come off the bench or take McMahons place if he were to be dropped for whatever reason, but we should be looking to McMahon to take the mantle towards the end of the season and prove that he deserves a long-term contract.
