Downing looking at pastures new?
By Shaun • Nov 3rd, 2008 • Category: Boro NewsWell we all know that you have to take anything you read in the papers, especially the tabloids, with a pinch of salt but rumours of Stewart Downing leaving the Riverside have resurfaced over the last few days.
Downing’s form this season has not been anywhere near his best and he has become a target for England “boo boys” when on international duty and, more worringly, a small minority of Boro fans have taken to booing the home grown star recently.
The inevitable Tottenham rumours have resurfaced in the papers, this may very well be lazy journalism as rumours of Downing moving to Tottenham seem to crop up every few months. Liverpool, Everton and Aston Villa are also rumoured to be taking an interest.
We recently debated the Downing issue on the Boro Mania forum with a number of posters thinking it wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world for Downinig to move on and that, if he is going to fulfill his full potential and win over England fans, he will need to move to a so-called bigger club. With Adam Johnson waiting in the wings many fans believe we have a ready made replacement for Downing sat on the bench, I personally feel Johnson has a way to go before he can be compared to Downing but he does have a lot of potential.

On his performance this season I think he is keeping a player out that may, if he learns how to cross, be just as effective as Downing. The advantage Johnson has is that he still runs at defenders and it has been a while since Downing has had the confidence to do that. What we don’t need is a player whinging about how unfair the world is and I suspect that the England fans have already made their minds up about Downing even if he was at a ‘bigger’ club at the bottom of the Premiership.
You get the feeling this year that Downing is beginning to wish he moved on, he doesn’t look happy at all. I’d hate to se us lose him but i’d also hate to see us lose Johnson without us giving him a proper chance to prove himself
Never mind Downing getting the feeling he’d wished he’d moved on. I wish he’d move on.
He’s a miserable get. Id rather lose him than Adam Johnson. We’ve got players waiting in the wings behind Adam Johnson, such as Porritt and Owens…
Johnson has the quality to play for us week in week out, he might not have that cross that Downing has, but every other area of his game is stronger than Downing’s.
If we can get £10m+ for Downing, i’d take it and i wouldn’t look back. Atleast we could spend it on other areas of the pitch.
