Coventry City - Meet the opposition

By Shaun • Sep 23rd, 2009 • Category: Featured Articles

Saturday presents Middlesbrough with the opportunity to put the mauling at the hands at WBA behind as they travel to the Ricoh Arena to face Coventry City. Coventry are off to a decent start this season though and at home they look a difficult prospect. Whether Boro come out like a wounded animal, with fire in their bellies, determined to put things right or whether the demolition job by West Brom has completely shattered confidence will play a big part in the outcome of this encounter.

To get a little more information on the opposition we interviewed Kev, editor of Coventry City Mad

Introduce yourself, how long have you been a Coventry City fan and do you get to many games?

Kev, 44, A match going Coventry City supporter for 39 years. Saturday's game will be my 1844th City first team game

Many Boro fans may not know much about Coventry, who are the dangermen and key players?

Our goalkeeper Keiren Westwood adds a few to the gate in the amount of scouts he attracts. He is rated in the £10m bracket. Clinton Morrison and Leon Best will always be amongst the goals. Sammy Clingan is a master of a killer ball whilst Ben Turner along with Martin Cranie are looking solid at the back.

What about Coventry's future, any promising kids coming through?

Last season and this season, Coventry's U18's have achieved some remarkable results. Last season four from the side were given first team debuts and two more have had league debuts this season with another two making substitute appearances in the League Cup. Our Academy has at least another five players who will knocking on the first team manager's door later this season.

How would you class your start to the season thus far?

Going into the game, Coventry are five points better off this season against the eight teams we have played last season than we were last season. So it has not been a bad start at all.

What are Coventry's ambitions this season? Promotion? Top half finish?

At the moment, Coventry City are too inconsistent. Until we start to put in winning performances week in week out, we won't be able to challenge the top sides. After two seasons of finishes in the lower reaches of the division, I'd be very happy to settle for mid-table.

Who would be the dangerman or one to look out for in the Boro team from a Coventry viewpoint?

Leroy Lita if he plays will score goals in any division and is always a threat to any defence. Aliadiere is also highly dangerous and Sean St Ledger whom you have taken on loan normally does well against Coventry.

Who do you see going up this season?

The same three who came down

What is your prediction for this game?

Had you not lost 5-0 last Saturday, I would have fancied Coventry's chances of getting something. However, statistically, a team who gets beaten heavily usually gets a good result in their next game. So I'm going for the same score as the last time you visited the Ricoh Arena a 1-1 draw.

  1. Tough game this one, Coventry aren’t a bad side. I’ve heard good things about Westwood, their keeper too.

  2. Well i really hope they have had a rocket fired into them this week and that they come out fighting on Saturday. Coventry are no mugs and Coleman has got them playing well so we will need to be on form

  3. O’Neil is back and Aliadiere is fit so we have to quietly confident of getting something. WBA was a blip, a bloody big one, but we need to move on and start grinding out results again.
