Boro youngster to miss Playoffs

By Shaun • May 7th, 2009 • Category: Boro News

Rhys Williams has returned to Middlesbrough after Burnley failed in their appeal to extend his loan spell for the playoff period. The Boro youngster made 17 appearances in the Championship for Burnley this season and can count his time at Turf Moor as a success.

We got a quick quote from Burnley fan and Editor of the Vital Burnley site, Phil Lea who said:

Rhys has been very popular with the Clarets faithful and we were sorry that we couldn't keep him for the play-offs challenge this month. He slotted in really well at right back, was solid in defence and was exciting when he dashed down the right wing to set up a number of attacking moves. He only had one game that was an absolute howler for him and that was against Southampton recently at St Marys. In his own words:

I just want to say a massive thanks to all the staff, players and especially the fans. They were always behind me and I just want to say a huge than you to everyone for making it a very enjoyable three months. I enjoyed every minute - besides the Southampton game when I thought I had an absolute stinker! I tried to work hard in my 17 games and I think it only worked out that we lost two games, which is an added bonus. I was delighted to play a small part and I am absolutely thrilled to see the club in the play offs. I'm buzzing at what's been achieved and it's just a shame I had to come back to Middlesbrough, but I will definitely be back to watch the lads at the game on Saturday and hopefully the lads can get the right result and take a massive step towards the final.

So an excellent player for us and one of our more successful loans. I don't think Coyle would have any hesitation having him back.

The experience Williams has gained at this level will only stand him in good stead next season. If we stay up I think he will be pushing hard for a role in the first team squad, if we go down he has valuable experience at Championship level and will likely find himself involved in the first team on a more regular basis.
