Boro progress in the FA Youth Cup
By Shaun • Dec 1st, 2008 • Category: Reserves & AcademyThe Middlesbrough Academy side have progressed through to the next round of the FA Youth cup after beating Brentford 2-1 at Griffin Park.
Boro were made to work for their victory however and it looked like it would be an uphill struggle as the home side were awarded a penalty, Sam Filler bringing down David Pitt in the area. Lewis Ochoa stepped up to take the spot kick but blasted it off the post.
Middlesbrough capitalised on this missed opportunity as Gary Martin, a young player who has impressed me whenever I have seen him play this season, headed home a cross from Patrick Otte.
Martin it was who doubled Boro’s lead as he took advantage of some sloppy defending and rifled home a left foot finish.
Brentford were given a lifeline as they were once again awarded a penalty, Shead handling in the box. This time Lewis Ochoa converted the spot kick to give the home team hope, but Boro held on for a victory.
Team: Filler; Oliver, Shead, Corker, Furness (Edwards 40); Smallwood, Gray (Park 81), Weldon, Otte (Harris 75); Martin, Cronesberry. Unused subs: Smith (gk); Roushias.

Be a good experience for this generation of youngsters, although i’m not expecting anything special since the “golden” generation has passed (Johnson, Mcmahon, Morrison etc)
